Rome is a walking city until the thing you want is four hill neighborhoods away and the bus you need does not believe in your schedule.
Before you land
Fiumicino is a Leonardo Express or a taxi with an official desk. Install before you land so the train platform is not a group decision. Termini is large and well signed, and still a place you want a map pin for the hotel shuttle.
Getting around
Walk the center. Use the metro for the Vatican and the Appian Way side of town. Buses are useful and irregular; Maps is more honest than the posted timetable. Taxis from stands are fine, street-hailed ones less so.
Practical notes
Carry a little cash for small cafes. Dress codes at churches are enforced. Type C and L plugs both appear; a small adapter covers it.
